Rising above the northern Sawatch Range of central Colorado, Mount of the Holy Cross is one of the most historically significant fourteeners in the American West. Modern LiDAR measurements place its summit at approximately 14,007 feet (4,269 meters), making it the highest point in Eagle County and the highest summit of the northern Sawatch Range.

The mountain is famous for the enormous cross-shaped snowfield that forms on its northeast face. Snow accumulates in a steep vertical couloir crossed by a horizontal rock bench, producing a natural white cross that once remained exceptionally distinct well into summer.

Stories of the mysterious β€œsnowy cross” circulated through nineteenth-century Colorado long before most Americans knew exactly where the mountain stood.

That changed in 1873.

Members of Ferdinand Hayden’s government survey located the mountain, and survey photographer William Henry Jackson captured the first famous photograph of the cross from nearby Notch Mountain. The image spread across the United States and transformed Mount of the Holy Cross into a national landmark, artistic subject, pilgrimage destination, and eventually a national monument.

The mountain’s climbing history is equally important.

James T. Gardner and William Henry Holmes completed the first documented ascent in August 1873 during the same Hayden Survey expedition.

Today, Mount of the Holy Cross remains one of Colorado’s more demanding standard Class 2 fourteenersβ€”not because of technical climbing, but because the normal North Ridge route requires roughly 11.25 miles of hiking and about 5,600 feet of cumulative elevation gain.

The route also has an unusual trap.

Climbers must cross Half Moon Pass and descend roughly 1,000 feet before climbing Mount of the Holy Cross. That elevation loss must be regained on the return journey, when hikers are already tired.

The mountain has approximately 2,113 feet (644 meters) of topographic prominence and 18.42 miles (29.64 kilometers) of isolation.

Its literal Nearest Higher Neighbor is the Far Northwest Peak of the Mount Massive massif, a minor 14,169-foot subsidiary summit. The broader prominence hierarchy leads into the Mount Massive–Mount Elbert high country.

Mount of the Holy Cross is also geologically fascinating. Its summit consists largely of extremely old Precambrian gneiss and migmatite, rocks whose history reaches back roughly 1.7 billion years.

Glaciers, uplift, erosion, rock fractures, and snow accumulation eventually combined to create one of the most recognizable natural symbols in Colorado.

Modern LiDAR measurements place Mount of the Holy Cross at:

14,006.8 feet / 4,269.3 meters

which is conventionally rounded to:

14,007 feet.

Older U.S. Geological Survey maps listed:

14,005 feet.

A newer national vertical reference system known as NAPGD2022 also produces an elevation near 14,005 feet because elevations shift slightly when measured relative to a different vertical datum.

The mountain itself has not changed by several feet.

Instead, the difference comes from changes in how elevation is measured and what reference surface is used.

For consistency with current Colorado climbing databases, 14,007 feet is the most practical figure.

Mount of the Holy Cross is the highest point in Eagle County.

Eagle County stretches from the high Sawatch and Gore mountain regions toward the Colorado River corridor.

The county contains numerous high summits, but Holy Cross exceeds them all.

The literal nearest higher summit in modern Peakbagger data is the Far Northwest Peak of the Mount Massive massif.

That subsidiary summit reaches approximately:

18.4 miles south

of Mount of the Holy Cross.

It has only a few feet of its own prominence and is therefore not an independent major mountain.

For ordinary geographic discussion, the more useful relationship is that higher terrain does not appear until the Mount Massive massif.

That distance gives Holy Cross remarkable visual independence.

The prominence hierarchy ultimately leads to Mount Elbert, Colorado’s highest mountain.

Mount Elbert reaches approximately:

14,438–14,440 feet

depending on elevation dataset.

It is also the highest summit of the Rocky Mountains.

This places Mount of the Holy Cross within the enormous high-elevation network dominated by the central Sawatch giants.

✝️ The Famous Snow Cross

The mountain’s defining feature is the cross-shaped snowfield on its northeast face.

The cross consists of two intersecting geological features.

A long vertical couloir descends from high on the mountain.

A horizontal bench or cleft intersects the couloir.

Both collect snow more deeply than the surrounding steep rock face.

As ordinary snow melts from exposed slopes, snow remains inside these protected depressions.

The result is a giant white cross.

To photograph the northeast face properly, Jackson needed a viewpoint almost directly opposite the mountain.

Mount of the Holy Cross became one of the rare American mountains known as much for artistic and religious associations as for geography.

The mountain became so famous that President Herbert Hoover established:

before reaching the creek and designated camping area.

This descent is one of the main reasons the climb is so exhausting.

Hikers must climb all of that elevation again on the way back.

That means summit elevation minus trailhead elevation dramatically understates the true work required.

The route accumulates around 5,600 feet of climbing even though the summit is less than 3,700 vertical feet above the trailhead.

Backpackers can divide the climb into two days by camping near East Cross Creek.

Current Forest Service management restricts camping along this heavily used section to:

🧭 Why People Get Lost on Holy Cross

Mount of the Holy Cross has long had a reputation for navigation problems.

The greatest danger often occurs during descent.

Several nearby ridges and basins can look deceptively similar.

Historically, tired hikers have descended into the wrong drainage rather than returning to Half Moon Pass.

The correct descent follows the North Ridge back toward East Cross Creek.

Do not descend east directly toward the famous Cross Couloir or nearby basins.

🌩️ Thunderstorms

Afternoon thunderstorms are among the mountain’s greatest summer hazards.

The upper North Ridge is extremely exposed.

Storms can bring:

Because the route is so long, climbers generally need to start very early.

The goal should be to descend substantially from the summit before thunderstorms develop.

Snow can remain on Mount of the Holy Cross into summer.

The standard North Ridge may encounter:

The mountain becomes a much more serious mountaineering objective under winter or spring conditions.

An ordinary Class 2 summer route rating does not apply when steep slopes are covered in hard snow.

The vertical portion of the famous snowy cross forms the Cross Couloir.

It is one of Colorado’s classic steep snow routes.

The route is very different from the North Ridge.

One of the striking alpine lakes near Mount of the Holy Cross is the Bowl of Tears.

The lake lies high beneath Holy Cross Ridge.

It occupies a glacially carved basin surrounded by steep rock.

The poetic name fits the mountain’s long history of religious symbolism.

Halo Ridge climbers receive exceptional views into the basin.

Notch Mountain rises northeast of Mount of the Holy Cross.
