Gasherbrum II, historically surveyed as K4, is the world’s 13th-highest mountain and one of the fourteen universally recognized peaks rising above 8,000 meters. It stands deep within the Karakoram on the border between Pakistan and China, surrounded by some of the highest and most dramatic mountains on Earth.

Although Gasherbrum II is sometimes described as one of the less technically difficult eight-thousanders by its standard route, that description can be misleading. The mountain still presents the extreme altitude, unstable snow, crevasses, avalanches, storms, and prolonged isolation associated with major Karakoram expeditions.

This first part explores Gasherbrum II’s identity, geographic setting, verified elevation statistics, relationship to the surrounding Gasherbrum peaks, and the geological forces that created its distinctive summit pyramid.

🏔️ Overview

Gasherbrum II rises to an elevation of 8,035 meters (26,362 feet) in the Baltoro Muztagh, a high subrange of the Karakoram. Its summit lies directly on the international boundary separating Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan from Xinjiang in China.

The mountain forms part of the greater Gasherbrum group, a compact concentration of giant peaks southeast of K2. This exceptionally rugged area includes:

  • Gasherbrum I, also called Hidden Peak
  • Gasherbrum II
  • Gasherbrum III
  • Gasherbrum IV
  • Gasherbrum V
  • Gasherbrum VI
  • Broad Peak, which is sometimes treated as part of a separate neighboring group

Gasherbrum II is the second-highest of the numbered Gasherbrum peaks, after Gasherbrum I. Broad Peak is slightly higher than Gasherbrum II but is not always classified as part of the core Gasherbrum massif.

The mountain is particularly recognizable from the south because of its broad, symmetrical summit pyramid. Snowfields and glaciers cover much of its upper slopes, while steeper rock bands and ice formations interrupt the otherwise sweeping profile.

One of the Four Karakoram Eight-Thousanders

The Karakoram contains four of the world’s fourteen recognized 8,000-meter mountains:

  1. K2 — 8,611 meters
  2. Gasherbrum I — 8,080 meters
  3. Broad Peak — 8,051 meters
  4. Gasherbrum II — 8,035 meters

All four stand within a relatively small area around the upper Baltoro Glacier and the Pakistan–China frontier. Few other places on Earth contain such an extraordinary concentration of high summits.

Gasherbrum II is the lowest of the four Karakoram eight-thousanders, but it remains higher than every mountain outside Asia. It is also taller than well-known peaks such as Annapurna II, Nanda Devi, Kamet, and the highest mountains of the Andes, Alaska Range, Alps, and Caucasus.

Why Is Gasherbrum II Called K4?

The name K4 dates to the early surveying of the Karakoram.

In 1856, British surveyor Thomas George Montgomerie observed a series of immense peaks while working for the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India. Because their local names were not yet known to the survey team, he assigned temporary designations beginning with the letter K, representing Karakoram.

The original sequence included:

  • K1 — Masherbrum
  • K2 — K2
  • K3 — Gasherbrum IV
  • K4 — Gasherbrum II
  • K5 — Gasherbrum I

Most of these survey labels were eventually replaced when established regional names became known. K2 was the notable exception: its survey designation became its permanent and internationally recognized name.

Gasherbrum II is therefore still sometimes called K4, particularly in historical accounts, mountain lists, maps, and discussions of the original Karakoram survey peaks.

What Does “Gasherbrum” Mean?

The name Gasherbrum is generally derived from Balti words interpreted as meaning “beautiful mountain.”

It is frequently translated as “shining wall,” but that translation appears to result from confusion with Gasherbrum IV. During an 1892 journey through the Karakoram, British explorer William Martin Conway used the expression “shining wall” for the spectacular face of Gasherbrum IV.

Over time, the description became incorrectly associated with the meaning of the entire Gasherbrum name.

First Ascent

Gasherbrum II was first climbed on July 7, 1956, by Austrian mountaineers:

  • Fritz Moravec
  • Josef Larch
  • Hans Willenpart

They reached the summit by way of the mountain’s southwest ridge during an Austrian Karakoram expedition led by Moravec.

The ascent came after significant difficulties. An avalanche reportedly buried one of the expedition’s camps and much of its equipment. The climbers nevertheless continued, established their route higher on the mountain, and made a rapid summit attempt.

Moravec, Larch, and Willenpart spent an exposed night in a bivouac before reaching the summit the following morning. Their route became the foundation of what is now considered the normal climbing route on Gasherbrum II.

The achievement occurred during a remarkable period in high-altitude mountaineering. By 1956, several of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks had been climbed, but many remained major unsolved objectives. Gasherbrum II’s first ascent helped complete the early exploration of the great mountains surrounding the Baltoro Glacier.

Understanding the Parent Peak

Gasherbrum II’s parent peak is Gasherbrum I, which rises to approximately 8,080 meters. A parent peak is a higher mountain connected to a summit through the surrounding ridge-and-col system.

Gasherbrum I stands southeast of Gasherbrum II and is the highest summit in the Gasherbrum massif. The two mountains are separated by a deeply glaciated system of ridges, cols, and high basins.

Gasherbrum I is also known as Hidden Peak, a name given by William Martin Conway because the mountain was concealed from many viewpoints along the Baltoro Glacier.

Understanding the Nearest Higher Neighbor

The nearest higher neighbor of Gasherbrum II is also Gasherbrum I.

The summits are farther apart than the listed isolation measurement might initially suggest. Topographic isolation is not necessarily measured from one summit directly to another. Instead, it measures the shortest horizontal distance from a summit to any point of equal or greater elevation.

For Gasherbrum II, the nearest terrain reaching at least 8,035 meters lies on the higher structure of Gasherbrum I. That produces a topographic isolation of approximately 5.27 kilometers, even though the summit-to-summit distance is greater.

📍 Location

Gasherbrum II is situated in one of the most remote mountain regions in the world. Its summit lies on the crest of the Karakoram, where the international border between Pakistan and China follows the high watershed.

The southern and western sides of the mountain face Gilgit-Baltistan, while the northern and eastern slopes descend toward Xinjiang.

The Pakistan–China Border

The border position gives Gasherbrum II a divided geographic identity.

On the Pakistan side, the mountain belongs to the upper Baltoro region of Shigar District. This side contains the traditional climbing approach and the route used by most expeditions.

On the Chinese side, the mountain overlooks remote terrain associated with Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County in southern Xinjiang. Access from this side is considerably less common and has historically been affected by border controls and restrictions on travel through the Shaksgam region.

Because the summit itself lies on the boundary, Gasherbrum II is included among the highest mountains of both Pakistan and China.

The Baltoro Muztagh

Gasherbrum II forms part of the Baltoro Muztagh, one of the highest subranges of the Karakoram.

The word Muztagh is commonly used in Central Asian mountain names and means “ice mountain” or “ice-covered mountain.” The name is especially appropriate here because enormous glaciers surround nearly every major summit.

The Baltoro Muztagh includes many internationally famous mountains, including:

  • K2
  • Broad Peak
  • Gasherbrum I
  • Gasherbrum II
  • Gasherbrum III
  • Gasherbrum IV
  • Masherbrum
  • Chogolisa
  • Muztagh Tower

The range’s main crest forms part of the boundary between Pakistan and China. Its southern side is drained by glaciers flowing toward the upper Indus River system, while glaciers north of the watershed drain toward the interior basins of Xinjiang.

The Upper Baltoro Glacier Region

The usual approach to Gasherbrum II begins on the Pakistan side and follows the Baltoro Glacier system.

Expeditions generally travel through Skardu before continuing by road toward Askole, one of the final permanently inhabited settlements on the approach. From there, climbers and support teams trek through the Braldu Valley and onto the Baltoro Glacier.

The approach passes beneath some of the Karakoram’s most recognizable mountains, including the Trango Towers, Cathedral Peaks, Masherbrum, and Muztagh Tower.

Near Concordia, the meeting point of several major glaciers, the surrounding landscape opens into an extraordinary amphitheater containing K2, Broad Peak, and the Gasherbrum group.

Teams traveling to Gasherbrum II continue beyond Concordia toward the upper Baltoro and Gasherbrum glacier systems.

Surrounding Glaciers

Gasherbrum II is enclosed by an interconnected network of high-altitude glaciers. These glaciers shape both the mountain’s appearance and the routes used to approach it.

Important nearby ice bodies include:

  • Upper Baltoro Glacier
  • South Gasherbrum Glacier
  • West Gasherbrum Glacier
  • Abruzzi Glacier
  • North Gasherbrum Glacier
  • East Gasherbrum Glacier

The glacier names and boundaries can vary between maps, but together they form part of one of the largest glacier concentrations outside the polar regions.

These moving ice systems continually reshape the mountain. They deepen valleys, transport enormous quantities of rock, create unstable seracs, and open crevasses that can change substantially during a single climbing season.

Central Karakoram National Park

The Pakistan side of Gasherbrum II lies within Central Karakoram National Park, the largest protected area in Pakistan.

Established in 1993, the park encompasses much of the central Karakoram, including the Baltoro Glacier and four 8,000-meter peaks. Its protected landscapes contain glaciers, alpine valleys, high plateaus, rock towers, and some of the most extensive areas of permanent ice outside the Arctic and Antarctic.

The park also protects the lower valleys and ecosystems through which expeditions must travel before reaching the barren upper glaciers.

Distance from Settlements

There are no permanent communities near Gasherbrum II. The nearest settlements are separated from the mountain by many days of travel across valleys, moraines, and glaciers.

Askole serves as the traditional starting point for expeditions approaching the central Karakoram from Pakistan. Skardu is the principal regional transportation and logistical center.

Even after reaching the trailhead, climbers normally require approximately a week or more to reach the Gasherbrum base camp area, depending on weather, trail conditions, acclimatization schedules, and the exact itinerary.

This isolation is one of the defining characteristics of climbing in the Karakoram. Rescue operations are difficult, communications may be limited, and expeditions must transport nearly everything required for life at base camp and on the mountain.

🏔️ Field Guide Tip

Gasherbrum II should never be treated as an introductory mountaineering objective simply because its normal route is less technical than routes on K2 or Gasherbrum I.

Reaching the mountain requires a long glacial approach, specialized expedition support, advanced crevasse-rescue skills, extensive acclimatization, and previous experience at extreme altitude. Conditions above 8,000 meters can become life-threatening even when the technical climbing appears moderate.

📏 Elevation & Prominence

Gasherbrum II has a generally accepted elevation of 8,035 meters, although some sources use 8,034 meters.

This one-meter variation reflects differences between historical surveys, maps, rounding methods, and modern elevation databases. It does not affect the mountain’s global ranking.

At either measurement, Gasherbrum II remains the 13th-highest mountain in the world.

How High Is Gasherbrum II?

At 8,035 meters, Gasherbrum II rises:

  • 26,362 feet above sea level
  • More than five vertical miles above sea level
  • Approximately 1,074 meters higher than Aconcagua
  • Approximately 2,140 meters higher than Mount Kilimanjaro
  • Approximately 3,226 meters higher than Mont Blanc

Its summit reaches well into the atmospheric zone commonly known as the death zone, generally considered to begin near 8,000 meters.

Above this elevation, the partial pressure of oxygen is too low for the human body to maintain normal functions indefinitely. Acclimatization can slow deterioration but cannot eliminate it.

Climbers must therefore limit the amount of time spent near the summit and descend as quickly as conditions permit.

Gasherbrum II is only about 8 meters higher than Shishapangma, the lowest of the fourteen recognized eight-thousanders.

Elevation figures can vary slightly between published lists, but the ordering of these four mountains is widely accepted.

Topographic Prominence

Gasherbrum II has a topographic prominence of approximately 1,524 meters (5,000 feet).

Prominence measures how far a summit rises above the lowest connecting saddle that must be crossed before reaching higher terrain. It therefore describes a mountain’s independence rather than its height above sea level.

Gasherbrum II’s key col is Gasherburn La, which has an estimated elevation of approximately 6,511 meters.

The calculation is:

8,035 m summit elevation − 6,511 m key-col elevation = 1,524 m prominence

Because its prominence exceeds 1,500 meters, Gasherbrum II qualifies as an ultra-prominent peak, commonly shortened to an “Ultra.”

This distinction shows that Gasherbrum II is not simply a minor high point attached to another mountain. It has substantial vertical separation from Gasherbrum I and the rest of the surrounding massif.

Topographic Isolation

Gasherbrum II has a topographic isolation of approximately 5.27 kilometers (3.27 miles).

This is relatively limited compared with isolated continental high points because Gasherbrum II stands within an exceptionally dense cluster of giant mountains.

Nearby summits and high points include:

  • Gasherbrum III immediately to the west
  • Gasherbrum II East Peak to the east
  • Gasherbrum I to the southeast
  • Broad Peak to the northwest
  • Gasherbrum IV farther west

Gasherbrum III rises to roughly 7,950 meters but has comparatively limited prominence because it is closely connected to Gasherbrum II. Some classifications consequently treat Gasherbrum III as a subsidiary peak rather than a fully independent mountain.

Gasherbrum II East Peak, rising to approximately 7,758 meters, is clearly considered a subpeak of Gasherbrum II.

Elevation Versus Difficulty

Gasherbrum II’s status as the 13th-highest mountain does not mean it is the 13th-most-difficult mountain to climb.

Elevation rankings measure only height above sea level. Climbing difficulty is influenced by many other factors, including:

  • Steepness
  • Rock and ice quality
  • Avalanche exposure
  • Crevasse hazards
  • Weather
  • Route length
  • Objective danger
  • Ease of retreat
  • Availability of rescue
  • Technical climbing requirements

The southwest ridge is generally considered less technically demanding than the standard routes on K2 or Gasherbrum I. Nevertheless, its altitude and remoteness make Gasherbrum II a serious expedition mountain with potentially fatal consequences.

🪨 Geology

Gasherbrum II belongs to the Karakoram, one of the world’s youngest, highest, and most geologically complex mountain systems.

Its present form reflects continental collision, crustal compression, metamorphism, faulting, erosion, and glaciation acting over tens of millions of years.

The India–Asia Collision

The geological development of the Karakoram is closely connected to the northward movement of the Indian tectonic plate.

Before the modern mountains existed, the Tethys Ocean separated the Indian landmass from Eurasia. As India moved northward, the oceanic crust between the continents was gradually consumed beneath surrounding plate margins.

India eventually collided with Eurasia during the Cenozoic Era. The collision compressed and thickened the crust across an enormous region, contributing to the uplift of the Himalaya, Tibetan Plateau, Hindu Kush, Pamir, and Karakoram.

The collision continues today. India is still moving generally northward relative to Eurasia, producing ongoing deformation, earthquakes, uplift, and erosion throughout the region.

The Karakoram Terrane

Gasherbrum II stands within the Karakoram terrane, a geological block associated with the southern margin of the Asian plate.

The terrane contains a complex mixture of:

  • Sedimentary rocks
  • Metamorphic rocks
  • Limestone and marble
  • Schist and slate
  • Dioritic rocks
  • Granitic intrusions
  • Younger glacial and moraine deposits

These rocks record several stages of deposition, burial, heating, deformation, melting, and uplift.

Geological studies of the broader Karakoram show that regional metamorphism and crustal melting occurred over a prolonged period. Magma generated within the thickened crust cooled to form major granite and diorite bodies, including parts of the Baltoro batholith.

Rocks of the Gasherbrum Area

Field observations from the Gasherbrum ridges and surrounding glacial moraines have identified a varied rock assemblage.

Reported materials include:

  • Compact limestone
  • White marble
  • Gray and black limestone
  • Chloritic and sericitic schist
  • Slate
  • Quartz diorite
  • Hematite-bearing rock
  • Granitic and dioritic material

Much of this evidence comes from exposed spurs and debris transported by glaciers. Moraine deposits can combine material eroded from several neighboring ridges, so they do not always represent the exact rock composition of the summit itself.

Nevertheless, the observations demonstrate that the Gasherbrum massif is not composed of a single uniform rock type. It includes sedimentary, metamorphic, and intrusive igneous rocks affected by intense mountain-building processes.

North of the Baltoro Batholith

The Gasherbrum range lies north of the main Baltoro granite batholith.

A batholith is a very large body of intrusive igneous rock formed when magma cools slowly beneath Earth’s surface. Later uplift and erosion can expose these once deeply buried rocks.

The Baltoro batholith contains large volumes of granite emplaced during the geological evolution of the Karakoram. Studies have dated important phases of Baltoro granite formation to the Miocene Epoch, when crustal melting was active along the southern Asian margin.

The Gasherbrum peaks occupy a geologically complex transition zone near these intrusive rocks and older sedimentary and metamorphic formations.

Glacial Sculpture

Tectonic uplift created the enormous relief of the Karakoram, but glaciers helped carve Gasherbrum II into its modern shape.

Snow accumulating at high elevations compresses into glacial ice. Under its own weight, the ice moves slowly downhill, scraping, plucking, and transporting rock.

Around Gasherbrum II, this process has produced:

  • Deep glacial valleys
  • Sharp ridges
  • Ice-covered cols
  • Cirques and high basins
  • Steep rock-and-ice faces
  • Extensive lateral and medial moraines
  • Crevassed glacier surfaces

Freeze-thaw weathering also contributes to erosion. Meltwater enters cracks during warmer periods and freezes when temperatures fall. The expansion of freezing water gradually widens fractures and loosens rock.

Rockfall debris is then carried away by glaciers or deposited on their surfaces.

A Mountain Still Being Reshaped

Gasherbrum II is not a static formation.

Tectonic forces continue to deform the broader Karakoram, while frost, avalanches, rockfalls, wind, and moving glaciers constantly alter the mountain’s surface.

The upper slopes may appear permanent when viewed from a distance, but snow conditions, seracs, crevasses, cornices, and exposed rock bands can change from year to year.

These changes affect climbing routes as well as the mountain’s physical appearance. A passage considered relatively safe during one expedition may become more hazardous after heavy snowfall, glacial movement, or the collapse of an ice formation.

Gasherbrum II therefore represents both an ancient geological story and an active high-mountain landscape that continues to evolve.

🌿 Flora & Fauna

Gasherbrum II rises far above the elevation at which complex plant communities can survive. Its summit, upper ridges, and surrounding high glaciers belong to the nival zone, an environment dominated by permanent snow, exposed rock, and moving ice.

Almost no visible plant life grows on the mountain’s upper slopes. However, the long expedition approach from the valleys of Baltistan to Gasherbrum Base Camp passes through several distinct ecological zones.

Vegetation Along the Approach

The route begins in the comparatively warm and dry valleys around Skardu, Shigar, and the Braldu River. Irrigated settlements support cultivated trees and crops, while natural vegetation follows rivers, sheltered gullies, and slopes where moisture is available.

River-bottom habitats in the lower reaches of Central Karakoram National Park include willow groves, shrubs, grasses, and other hardy plants adapted to a cold, semi-arid mountain climate.

As expeditions continue toward Askole and the Baltoro Glacier, the landscape becomes increasingly barren. Askole is the last permanent village on the traditional approach, and the cultivated fields surrounding it provide one of the final substantial areas of greenery before the glacial wilderness.

The route then passes through progressively thinner vegetation zones:

  • Dry mountain scrub near the lower Braldu Valley
  • Grasses and shrubs around sheltered campsites
  • Alpine pasture on high slopes and terraces
  • Low cushion plants, mosses, and lichens near the edge of the glacial zone
  • Almost completely barren moraine and ice beyond the upper Baltoro

Paju is often described as the final major vegetated campsite on the approach. Beyond Paju, trekkers step onto the debris-covered Baltoro Glacier, although isolated grassy ledges remain around places such as Urdukas.

The Central Karakoram contains hundreds of documented plant species across several ecological zones. Much of this botanical diversity occurs in the park’s lower valleys, alpine meadows, and buffer areas rather than on the high Gasherbrum glaciers.

Life Near Gasherbrum Base Camp

Gasherbrum Base Camp is normally established at approximately 5,050 to 5,200 meters, depending on the season and the exact placement of tents.

At this elevation, the environment is too severe for ordinary plant communities. The terrain consists primarily of:

  • Glacial ice
  • Snowfields
  • Rock debris
  • Moraine ridges
  • Meltwater channels
  • Exposed stone
  • Windblown dust and sediment

Temperatures can fall below freezing even during the summer climbing season. The ground is unstable, soil development is extremely limited, and the short periods of warmth are insufficient to support larger plants.

Microscopic life, algae, lichens, and other highly specialized organisms may survive in protected niches, but visitors should not expect to see recognizable alpine flowers or grasses around the mountain’s upper base camp.

Wildlife of the Wider Karakoram

Although the upper slopes of Gasherbrum II are almost biologically empty, Central Karakoram National Park protects an important community of high-altitude mammals and birds.

These animals are most likely to be seen during the approach trek rather than near the mountain itself.

Himalayan Ibex

The Himalayan ibex is among the most characteristic mammals of the Karakoram.

These powerful wild goats inhabit rocky slopes and alpine pastures, often between approximately 3,000 and 5,000 meters. Their strong legs and specialized hooves allow them to move across steep terrain that would be difficult for most predators and humans.

Mature males are recognizable by their large, backward-curving horns. Herds may sometimes be seen on the slopes above the Baltoro approach, particularly during quiet morning or evening periods.

Ibex are also an essential part of the Karakoram food web. They are one of the principal prey species of the snow leopard.

Snow Leopard

The snow leopard is the best-known predator of the high Karakoram.

It inhabits steep, broken terrain throughout parts of Central Karakoram National Park, but its low population density and secretive behavior make sightings extremely rare.

Snow leopards generally follow populations of ibex and other mountain ungulates. They are most active around dawn, dusk, and nighttime, and their pale coats provide exceptional camouflage among rock, scree, and snow.

A trekker may spend weeks in snow-leopard habitat without seeing one. Camera traps provide much of the scientific evidence for their continued presence in the park.

Snow leopards do not normally travel onto the exposed upper slopes of Gasherbrum II, where there is little prey and almost no usable habitat. Their range is concentrated lower on the surrounding mountain slopes and within adjacent valleys.

Himalayan Brown Bear

Small numbers of Himalayan brown bears inhabit portions of Gilgit-Baltistan, including areas associated with the wider national park.

They are more commonly linked to alpine meadows, side valleys, and the southern edges of the protected area than to the main Baltoro Glacier. Sightings along the direct Gasherbrum approach are uncommon.

Food storage remains important at all camps. Wildlife that begins associating human camps with food can become a danger to both visitors and the animals themselves.

Golden Marmot

Golden marmots are among the most frequently observed mammals in the alpine regions of northern Pakistan.

They live in colonies and dig burrows in grassy slopes and open meadows. Their sharp whistles are often the first sign of their presence.

Marmots are much more likely to be encountered during the lower approach than on the Baltoro Glacier. Vegetation and suitable soil disappear as trekkers move deeper into the upper glacial basin.

Visitors should never feed marmots. Feeding alters their natural behavior and can encourage wildlife to approach campsites and depend on human food.

Pikas and Smaller Mammals

Pikas, red foxes, martens, and other small mammals inhabit suitable rocky and vegetated terrain within the park.

Pikas are particularly well adapted to cold alpine environments. They gather grasses and other vegetation during warmer periods and store it for later use.

Like marmots, however, they require access to plant material and are rarely found on the almost vegetation-free glaciers close to Gasherbrum II.

Birds of the Baltoro

Birds can travel much farther into the glacial environment than most land mammals.

Species that may be observed over the wider Baltoro region include:

  • Bearded vultures, also called lammergeiers
  • Himalayan griffon vultures
  • Golden eagles
  • Peregrine falcons
  • Kestrels
  • Himalayan snowcocks
  • Snow partridges
  • Alpine accentors
  • Mountain finches

Large vultures may soar above ridges and glaciers while using rising air currents to conserve energy. The bearded vulture is especially distinctive because of its long wings and wedge-shaped tail.

Smaller birds are generally concentrated near lower camps where food, insects, grasses, and shelter remain available.

Environmental Pressures

The Karakoram’s cold temperatures slow the decomposition of waste. Materials abandoned on the glacier may remain visible for many years and can eventually be transported downslope by moving ice and meltwater.

Environmental concerns around major expedition corridors include:

  • Discarded tents and climbing equipment
  • Empty oxygen cylinders
  • Food packaging
  • Human waste
  • Fuel containers
  • Damaged fixed ropes
  • Contamination near camps
  • Disturbance of wildlife in lower valleys

Cleanup projects have removed substantial amounts of waste from the Baltoro region, but the remoteness of Gasherbrum II makes every removal operation difficult and expensive.

Expeditions should plan to carry out waste, minimize unnecessary packaging, use established toilet and waste-management systems, and avoid leaving equipment unless doing so is necessary for an emergency.

🥾 Hiking & Climbing Routes

There is no hiking route to the summit of Gasherbrum II.

Reaching the top requires a full high-altitude mountaineering expedition involving glacier travel, crevasse rescue skills, ice climbing, acclimatization rotations, specialized equipment, and the ability to survive for extended periods above 7,000 meters.

The mountain’s normal route is less technical than the standard routes on K2 or Gasherbrum I, but describing Gasherbrum II as “easy” is inaccurate. It remains an 8,000-meter peak in one of the world’s most remote mountain regions.

Trekking to Gasherbrum Base Camp

Non-climbers can trek toward the Gasherbrum group, although the journey is considerably longer and more demanding than an ordinary mountain hike.

Central Karakoram National Park recognizes a route from Askole to Gasherbrum Base Camp and back. The precise itinerary varies according to acclimatization, weather, porter arrangements, glacier conditions, and the location of the seasonal base camp.

A typical approach follows this general sequence:

  1. Skardu
  2. Shigar Valley
  3. Askole
  4. Jhola
  5. Paju
  6. Khoburtse or Urdukas
  7. Goro II
  8. Concordia
  9. Shagring or a nearby upper-Baltoro camp
  10. Gasherbrum Base Camp

The journey begins with a road trip from Skardu through the Shigar and Braldu valleys to Askole. Road conditions can be disrupted by rockfalls, flooding, landslides, and construction.

From Askole, the route continues on foot toward the Baltoro Glacier.

Askole to Paju

The first stages follow the Braldu River through a dry, rugged valley.

Although the trail is lower than the glacial camps farther ahead, these days can be physically difficult because of heat, dust, exposed terrain, long distances, and repeated climbs over rocky ground.

Paju provides an important acclimatization and rest point. It is also one of the last camps with substantial vegetation before the expedition moves onto the Baltoro Glacier.

Paju to Urdukas

Beyond Paju, the route climbs onto the Baltoro Glacier.

Much of the ice is hidden beneath rock debris, creating a constantly changing surface of ridges, hollows, loose stones, and exposed ice. The terrain may appear almost level from a distance but requires continuous attention.

Urdukas occupies a high ledge above the glacier and offers views toward the Trango Towers, Cathedral Peaks, and other central Karakoram mountains.

Urdukas to Concordia

The route proceeds across the glacier toward Goro II and Concordia.

As elevation increases, walking becomes slower and colder. Camps may be established directly on the glacier, where the surface can shift, melt, and crack beneath tents.

Concordia lies near the junction of the Baltoro and Godwin-Austen glaciers. It provides a celebrated panorama of K2, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum IV, and numerous surrounding peaks.

Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum II may be partly obscured by foreground ridges from some positions, but the greater Gasherbrum massif dominates the eastern side of the mountain amphitheater.

Concordia to Gasherbrum Base Camp

K2 expeditions turn north from Concordia toward the Godwin-Austen Glacier. Gasherbrum expeditions instead continue southeast through the upper Baltoro region.

The approach commonly passes through or near Shagring before reaching the seasonal Gasherbrum Base Camp.

The exact base-camp elevation varies between accounts. Reported locations generally fall between approximately 5,050 and 5,200 meters.

Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum II expeditions often use the same general base-camp area. From there, their climbing routes eventually separate within the surrounding glacier system.

Difficulty of the Base Camp Trek

The trek to Gasherbrum Base Camp is not technically equivalent to climbing the mountain, but it remains a serious high-altitude journey.

Challenges include:

  • Many consecutive days of walking
  • Loose moraine
  • Glacier crossings
  • Unstable rocks
  • Cold camps
  • Limited shelter
  • High winds
  • Snowfall
  • River and stream crossings
  • Altitude illness
  • Restricted evacuation options

Some sections may require guides to adjust the route around crevasses, meltwater channels, or damaged moraine.

A trekker reaching the Gasherbrum Base Camp area is already at an elevation comparable to or higher than the summits of many famous mountains elsewhere in the world.

Permits and Expedition Support

Gasherbrum II lies in a controlled mountaineering area close to an international border. Climbers cannot simply arrive at Askole and begin an independent ascent without completing the required procedures.

Foreign expeditions normally arrange permits through a licensed Pakistani tour operator. Applications may involve:

  • Visa documentation
  • A mountaineering permit
  • A proposed route map
  • Expedition member information
  • Passport copies
  • Insurance documentation
  • Royalty and environmental fees
  • Liaison or guide arrangements

Requirements, processing times, and fees can change, so expedition leaders should confirm current regulations directly with Pakistan’s tourism and visa authorities well before travel.

The Normal Route: Southwest Ridge

The standard climbing route is the Southwest Ridge, also known as the Austrian Route or Moravec Route.

It follows the general line used during the first ascent in 1956.

The route begins by crossing the South Gasherbrum Glacier and negotiating an icefall or heavily crevassed glacial section. Climbers then establish a series of camps on the southwest side of the mountain.

Camp elevations vary according to snow conditions and expedition strategy, but a traditional arrangement is approximately:

These locations are not permanent. Glacial movement, snowfall, avalanches, serac danger, and the availability of safe tent platforms may force expeditions to place camps higher or lower.

Some lightweight teams use fewer camps, while larger expeditions may establish all four.

Base Camp to Camp I

The first major obstacle is the glacier and icefall separating Base Camp from Camp I.

The route can include:

  • Hidden crevasses
  • Snow bridges
  • Serac debris
  • Unstable ice blocks
  • Avalanche exposure
  • Complex route-finding

Climbers normally rope together while crossing crevassed sections. Ladders are less characteristic of Gasherbrum II than of heavily commercialized Himalayan routes, and any route infrastructure must be established by the expeditions present that season.

Camp I is generally placed near 5,900 meters after the most complicated section of the lower glacier.

The approach can be lengthy, especially early in an expedition when climbers are not fully acclimatized and the route has not yet been broken.

Camp I to Camp II

Above Camp I, the route continues over snow and ice toward the southwest ridge.

This portion may appear straightforward from a distance, but slope conditions can change greatly. Fresh snow may conceal crevasses, while warm periods can expose hard blue ice.

Camp II is typically placed near 6,400 or 6,500 meters.

Avalanche risk depends on recent snowfall, wind loading, temperature, and the route selected. Climbers must continually assess the slopes rather than assuming that the normal route is safe because it has been climbed many times.

Camp II to Camp III

The route becomes steeper between Camps II and III.

Some expeditions have reported sustained sections of ice approaching approximately 50 degrees. Fixed ropes may be placed on the steepest or most exposed passages, although their presence and condition should never be assumed.

Camp III is usually established near 6,900 to 7,000 meters.

At this elevation, recovery becomes increasingly difficult. Sleep quality deteriorates, appetite often declines, and ordinary camp tasks require much more energy.

Camp III commonly serves as a major acclimatization objective. Climbers may sleep here and then descend to Base Camp before beginning a final summit attempt.

Camp III to Camp IV

The route continues along or near the southwest ridge to a higher camp around 7,400 meters.

Snow conditions strongly influence the difficulty of this section. Deep snow can make progress exhausting, while hard ice may require extended front-pointing with crampons.

Camp IV is normally a small and exposed high camp. Tent platforms may need to be cut into the slope, and space can be limited.

Some teams omit a traditional Camp IV and begin their summit push from a lower camp. This creates a longer summit day and is generally attempted only by highly acclimatized climbers.

Camp IV to the Summit

The upper normal route approaches the rocky summit pyramid.

The line does not simply climb directly to the highest point. It generally follows the spur upward, traverses right beneath the upper pyramid, and then turns back left toward the summit.

This traverse can be one of the most consequential parts of the climb. It occurs at extreme altitude, where small navigational mistakes or delays can have serious results.

Possible difficulties include:

  • Hard snow and ice
  • Deep wind-drifted snow
  • Cornices
  • Avalanche-prone traverses
  • Exposed rock
  • Poor visibility
  • Route-finding difficulties
  • High winds
  • Extreme cold

The final summit area can be narrow and corniced. Climbers must verify that they have reached the true highest point without stepping onto unsupported snow overhanging the face.

The descent usually follows the same route and is often more dangerous than the ascent. Fatigue, dehydration, darkness, deteriorating weather, and reduced concentration contribute to many high-altitude accidents.

Acclimatization Rotations

A traditional expedition may spend several weeks establishing camps and completing acclimatization rotations.

A simplified progression might include:

  1. Trek gradually to Base Camp.
  2. Rest and organize equipment.
  3. Carry loads to Camp I.
  4. Sleep at Camp I and return.
  5. Establish Camp II.
  6. Sleep at Camp II and descend.
  7. Reach or sleep at Camp III.
  8. Return to Base Camp for several days of recovery.
  9. Wait for an appropriate summit window.
  10. Climb through the camps during the final summit attempt.

The exact schedule must be adjusted to the individual climber. Fitness does not guarantee protection from acute mountain sickness, high-altitude pulmonary edema, or high-altitude cerebral edema.

Persistent symptoms, loss of coordination, confusion, breathlessness at rest, or a significant decline in physical condition require immediate attention and usually descent.

Supplemental Oxygen

Gasherbrum II has frequently been climbed without supplemental oxygen, including many historically significant ascents.

Modern expedition practices vary. Some climbers carry oxygen for the summit attempt, while others climb entirely without it. Teams may also keep emergency oxygen at high camps even when members do not plan to use it routinely.

Supplemental oxygen does not remove the dangers of altitude, avalanches, falls, exposure, or exhaustion. Equipment failure or an incorrect flow rate can create additional problems if a climber has become dependent on it.

Major Hazards

Crevasses

The lower glacier contains numerous crevasses, many of which may be concealed beneath snow.

Snow bridges weaken as temperatures rise, and a route that appears secure in the morning may become more dangerous later in the day.

Avalanches

Avalanche danger can exist on several parts of the normal route. Heavy snowfall and wind can rapidly load slopes above camps and traverses.

The 2011 winter first-ascent team was struck by an avalanche during its descent toward Base Camp, demonstrating that danger continues even after climbers have left the summit slopes.

Serac Collapse

Large, unstable blocks of glacial ice can collapse with little or no warning.

Route selection may reduce exposure but cannot eliminate the risk where the approach passes beneath active ice formations.

High Winds and Storms

The Karakoram is affected by powerful westerly weather systems as well as summer moisture reaching the range from the south.

High winds can destroy tents, erase tracks, bury fixed ropes, create wind slabs, and make movement impossible.

Extreme Altitude

Above approximately 8,000 meters, the human body cannot fully acclimatize. Strength and judgment deteriorate, and prolonged exposure increases the probability of severe illness, frostbite, collapse, and death.

Rescue Limitations

Helicopter evacuation may sometimes be possible from lower elevations, but weather, aircraft availability, border restrictions, and altitude can prevent a rescue.

An injured climber high on Gasherbrum II may have to rely entirely on partners and nearby expeditions.

Other Routes

Gasherbrum II has been climbed by several alternative lines, but these routes are much more serious than the normal southwest ridge.

French Spur

A French expedition completed the central spur on the south face in 1975, making the mountain’s second ascent.

The route climbs a more direct line than the Austrian Route and includes steeper, more technical terrain. In 2021, a French team climbed the spur and completed its first ski descent.

Gasherbrum II East Traverse

In 1983, Jerzy Kukuczka and Wojciech Kurtyka completed a remarkable traverse involving Gasherbrum II East and Gasherbrum II.

The ascent represented a major achievement in lightweight, high-altitude climbing and followed terrain far removed from an ordinary commercial route.

Gasherbrum II–Gasherbrum I Traverse

In 1984, Reinhold Messner and Hans Kammerlander climbed Gasherbrum II, descended toward Gasherbrum La, and continued to Gasherbrum I without returning to Base Camp.

The traverse linked two 8,000-meter summits in a continuous alpine-style journey and became one of the landmark ascents of the era.

Southwest Face

In 2019, Denis Urubko climbed a complete new route on the southwest face, naming it Honeymoon.

He climbed the route alone, encountered deep snow and avalanche danger above 7,000 meters, reached the summit, and descended by the normal route.

The ascent illustrates the enormous difference between climbing Gasherbrum II by its established route and attempting a new technical line on the mountain.

Winter Route

On February 2, 2011, Simone Moro, Cory Richards, and Denis Urubko completed the first winter ascent of Gasherbrum II.

They used the normal southwest-ridge route but faced conditions far more severe than those normally encountered in summer. The ascent was also the first confirmed winter climb of one of Pakistan’s principal 8,000-meter peaks.

🏔️ Field Guide Tip

Trekkers should clearly distinguish between visiting Concordia, trekking to Gasherbrum Base Camp, and climbing Gasherbrum II.

Concordia is a strenuous but established trekking destination. Gasherbrum Base Camp is farther, higher, and more isolated. The summit requires expert expedition mountaineering experience.

Before booking, confirm exactly where an itinerary ends, what permits are included, whether glacier equipment is required, what rescue insurance is accepted, and whether the operator has recent experience in the Gasherbrum area.

🌤️ Best Time to Visit

The best time to approach or climb Gasherbrum II is during the Karakoram summer, generally from mid-June through August.

Trekkers may continue into early or mid-September in favorable years, but climbing expeditions usually concentrate on July and early August.

June

June marks the beginning of the main expedition season.

Early in the month, snow may still cover portions of the approach, and the upper glacier can be difficult to navigate. River crossings and roads toward Askole may also be affected by spring runoff, landslides, or late snow.

By late June, many expeditions reach Base Camp and begin establishing the route through the icefall.

Advantages of an early arrival include:

  • More time for acclimatization
  • Cooler glacier conditions
  • Opportunities to prepare the route before the busiest period
  • Greater flexibility if storms delay the expedition

Disadvantages include unsettled weather, deep snow, and additional work breaking trail.

July

July is generally the main month for Gasherbrum II expeditions.

Most teams complete their acclimatization rotations during late June or early July and then wait for a suitable summit window.

July commonly provides:

  • Longer daylight
  • More established glacier routes
  • Greater cooperation between expeditions
  • Milder Base Camp temperatures
  • A higher probability of several consecutive climbable days

However, stable weather is never guaranteed. Major storms can occur at any time and may deposit enough snow to close the route for days.

Fresh snowfall may also increase avalanche danger even after the sky has cleared.

August

Early August can still provide excellent summit conditions.

By this stage, the route may be well established, and climbers who arrived earlier are usually fully acclimatized. Some successful summit periods occur after late-July storms have passed.

Later in August, conditions become less predictable.

Potential concerns include:

  • Increasingly open crevasses
  • Weakened snow bridges
  • Warmer lower-glacier conditions
  • Shorter daylight
  • Colder nights
  • Early-season snowfall associated with approaching autumn
  • Reduced support as other teams leave Base Camp

An established track should not be considered automatically safe. Glacier routes must be reassessed as the season progresses.

September

September is more commonly used by late trekking groups than by Gasherbrum II climbing expeditions.

The Baltoro can be exceptionally clear and quiet during early autumn, but temperatures fall rapidly. Snowstorms may close the upper route, and logistical support becomes more limited as porter teams and expeditions return to the valleys.

Trekkers traveling in September should be prepared for:

  • Freezing nights
  • Snow-covered trails
  • Shorter days
  • Reduced campsite services
  • Delays caused by storms
  • Difficult travel across high passes

A September journey should include contingency days and equipment appropriate for winter-like conditions.

Winter

Gasherbrum II is not a normal winter travel destination.

Winter brings extreme cold, hurricane-force winds, deep snow, short daylight, and prolonged isolation. The approach itself becomes a major expedition.

The successful 2011 winter ascent remains exceptional because of the severity of the conditions. Even climbers with extensive 8,000-meter experience may be unable to move for long periods during a Karakoram winter.

Weather Windows

A summit attempt normally depends on a short period of relatively low wind and limited snowfall.

Teams may spend days or weeks waiting at Base Camp for an acceptable forecast. A suitable window must be long enough not only to reach the summit but also to descend through the exposed upper camps.

A brief clear period is not necessarily safe if it follows heavy snowfall. Avalanche conditions may remain dangerous after the storm has ended.

Forecasts are valuable, but climbers must also observe actual conditions on the mountain, including:

  • Wind plumes near the summit
  • Snow accumulation
  • Temperature changes
  • Avalanche activity
  • Cloud development
  • Barometric pressure
  • Conditions reported by teams at higher camps

The best practical time to climb is therefore not a fixed date. It is the point during the summer season when the climber is properly acclimatized, the route is in acceptable condition, and a sufficiently long weather window develops.

🧭 Nearby Mountains & Attractions

Gasherbrum II stands within one of the greatest concentrations of high mountains anywhere on Earth. The upper Baltoro region contains four 8,000-meter peaks, numerous 7,000-meter summits, enormous glaciers, and some of the world’s most celebrated rock walls.

Most visitors experience this landscape from the Pakistan side, approaching through Askole and following the Baltoro Glacier toward Concordia and the Gasherbrum base camps.

Gasherbrum I

Gasherbrum I is the highest mountain in the Gasherbrum massif and the world’s 11th-highest peak.

It rises southeast of Gasherbrum II and is also known as Hidden Peak. William Martin Conway applied that descriptive name because the mountain remains concealed behind foreground ridges during much of the approach along the Baltoro Glacier.

Gasherbrum I is Gasherbrum II’s parent peak and nearest higher neighbor. Its greater elevation explains why climbers sometimes attempt both mountains during the same expedition.

The two peaks share part of the approach and may use the same general base-camp area, but their upper routes are separate. Gasherbrum I is generally considered the more technically difficult of the two by its established route.

In 1984, Reinhold Messner and Hans Kammerlander completed a famous traverse linking Gasherbrum II and Gasherbrum I without returning to Base Camp between the summits.

Gasherbrum III

Gasherbrum III rises immediately west of Gasherbrum II and is connected to it by an exceptionally high saddle.

Its elevation is generally listed at approximately 7,952 meters, making it higher than several more independent Karakoram mountains. However, its limited prominence means it is often classified as a subsidiary summit of Gasherbrum II rather than as a fully independent mountain.

Gasherbrum III remained one of the world’s highest unclimbed summits until 1975. Its first ascent was made by:

  • Alison Chadwick-Onyszkiewicz
  • Janusz Onyszkiewicz
  • Krzysztof Zdzitowiecki

The climb formed part of a Polish expedition that also completed several ascents and new routes on Gasherbrum II.

Gasherbrum IV

Gasherbrum IV stands west of Gasherbrum III and is one of the most visually striking mountains in the Karakoram.

It was historically surveyed as K3, while Gasherbrum II received the designation K4.

Gasherbrum IV is lower than Gasherbrum II but considerably more technically difficult. Every established route involves sustained climbing on steep rock, mixed terrain, ice, or highly exposed ridges.

Its enormous West Face is commonly called the Shining Wall. This description is sometimes mistakenly presented as the translation of the name Gasherbrum. The Balti name is more accurately interpreted as “beautiful mountain.”

From portions of the Baltoro Glacier and Concordia, Gasherbrum IV is often the most prominent visible summit in the group. Its steep rocky pyramid can partially obscure the higher but more distant Gasherbrum peaks.

Gasherbrum II East Peak

Gasherbrum II East Peak is a subsidiary summit rising east of the main mountain.

It reaches approximately 7,758 meters, placing it among the world’s highest secondary peaks. Its limited topographic independence prevents it from being included on most lists of the highest separate mountains.

In 1983, Polish mountaineers Jerzy Kukuczka and Wojciech Kurtyka climbed Gasherbrum II by a new route involving the East Peak and southeast ridge.

Their ascent was completed in lightweight style and included difficult climbing far from the established southwest-ridge route. It became one of the important high-altitude achievements of the Polish mountaineering era.

Broad Peak

Broad Peak stands northwest of Gasherbrum II, near K2 and the Godwin-Austen Glacier.

At 8,051 meters, it is the world’s 12th-highest mountain—one position above Gasherbrum II. Its English name refers to the unusually long summit ridge rather than to a single narrow summit pyramid.

Broad Peak and Gasherbrum II are sometimes described as comparatively accessible eight-thousanders, but both remain extremely dangerous expedition mountains.

Broad Peak’s normal approach diverges from the Gasherbrum route around Concordia. Its base camp lies closer to the Godwin-Austen Glacier and K2 approach.

K2

K2 is the highest mountain in the Karakoram and the second-highest mountain on Earth.

It rises to 8,611 meters northwest of Gasherbrum II. Although the two summits are separated by glaciers, ridges, and several other mountains, they belong to the same extraordinary central Karakoram landscape.

K2 differs sharply from Gasherbrum II as a climbing objective. Gasherbrum II’s normal route is principally a snow-and-ice ascent with moderate technical sections. K2’s standard Abruzzi Spur includes steeper rock, ice, mixed climbing, exposed traverses, and severe objective hazards.

Both mountains are remote and subject to violent Karakoram weather, but K2 has a substantially greater overall technical reputation.

Chogolisa

Chogolisa rises southwest of Gasherbrum II, beyond the upper Baltoro Glacier.

Chogolisa is closely associated with Austrian mountaineer Hermann Buhl. In 1957, shortly after participating in the first ascent of Broad Peak, Buhl attempted Chogolisa with Kurt Diemberger.

Masherbrum

Masherbrum rises south of the Baltoro Glacier and was the original K1 of the nineteenth-century survey sequence.
