The Appalachians form a sweeping northeast-to-southwest mountain belt across eastern North America. Their northernmost sections appear on Newfoundland, where the Long Range Mountains rise above the island’s western coast.

🪨 Geology
The Appalachian Mountains were created through several major episodes of continental collision during the Paleozoic Era. Their geologic history is therefore more complicated than that of a mountain range formed during a single event.
Between approximately 500 and 300 million years ago, ancient landmasses and volcanic island arcs repeatedly collided with the eastern margin of ancestral North America. These collisions folded, faulted, metamorphosed, and uplifted enormous quantities of rock.
Three major mountain-building episodes played particularly important roles:
- Taconic Orogeny: Caused by the collision of an island arc with eastern North America.
- Acadian Orogeny: Associated with the collision of additional continental fragments.
- Alleghanian Orogeny: Occurred as ancestral Africa collided with North America during the formation of the supercontinent Pangaea.
