Tofana di Rozes is a massive 3,225-meter (10,580-foot) summit rising west of Cortina d’Ampezzo in the Italian Dolomites. It is the third-highest of the three principal Tofane, after Tofana di Mezzo and Tofana di Dentro, yet its enormous south face and remarkably isolated profile make it arguably the most visually imposing mountain in the group.

The mountain is shaped like a gigantic three-sided fortress. Its southern wall rises in horizontal tiers of pale and reddish Dolomite rock, while deep gullies and enormous scree fields surround its base. From Passo Falzarego and the Cinque Torri area, Tofana di Rozes dominates the horizon as one of the signature mountains of the Ampezzo Dolomites.

Its topographic statistics are equally impressive. Tofana di Rozes has approximately 664 meters (2,178 feet) of prominence and 1.91 kilometers (1.19 miles) of isolation. Its parent peak is Tofana di Mezzo, which also provides the nearest higher terrain.

The first recorded ascent was completed on August 29, 1864, by Austrian mountaineer Paul Grohmann with Ampezzo climbers Francesco Lacedelli, Angelo Dimai, and Santo Siorpaes. The mountain later became one of the great centers of Dolomite rock climbing and, during World War I, one of the most intensely fortified mountain landscapes on the Italian Front.

📍 Where Is Tofana di Rozes?

Tofana di Rozes rises immediately west of Cortina d’Ampezzo in the province of Belluno.

It forms the southwestern member of the Tofane, a compact group containing three principal summits above 3,200 meters.

Tofana di Mezzo reaches approximately 3,244 meters and is the highest peak in the group. Tofana di Dentro rises to approximately 3,238 meters, while Tofana di Rozes reaches 3,225 meters.

Despite being the lowest of the three, Rozes is often the most visually dominant from the south and southwest.

Passo Falzarego lies to the southwest, Val Travenanzes cuts deeply along the northern side of the massif, and the Ampezzo basin spreads eastward toward Cortina.

Farther east and south rise Cristallo, Sorapiss, and Antelao.

The Tofane form one of the most important mountain groups surrounding Cortina.

The peaks have very different personalities.

Tofana di Mezzo is the highest and today the easiest to access because of the Freccia nel Cielo cable-car system.

Tofana di Dentro is closely connected with Mezzo along the high northern ridge.

Rozes stands farther southwest, separated from the central massif by Forcella Fontananegra and the high basin surrounding Rifugio Giussani.

Its greater separation gives it a much stronger individual silhouette.

The resulting 664 meters of prominence is substantial for a summit situated within such a compact high massif.

🧭 Tofana di Mezzo: Nearest Higher Neighbor

Tofana di Mezzo is both the parent peak and Nearest Higher Neighbor of Tofana di Rozes.

Higher terrain is reached after approximately 1.91 kilometers.

Tofana di Mezzo exceeds Rozes by only about 19 meters, but the two mountains are separated by deeply cut terrain.

Forcella Fontananegra drops more than 660 meters below the Rozes summit.

That separation gives Rozes much greater topographic independence than might be expected from two mountains standing so close together.

⛰ A Giant Above the Ampezzo Valley

The summit rises nearly 2,000 vertical meters above portions of the Cortina basin.

Its south face is particularly imposing.

From the roads and hiking areas around Passo Falzarego, Cinque Torri, and Rifugio Dibona, the mountain appears as an immense tiered wall.

Horizontal rock bands divide the face into giant steps.

Vertical fractures then cut through those layers, creating pillars, gullies, corners, and isolated towers.

This combination of horizontal stratification and vertical faulting gives Rozes one of the most recognizable forms in the Dolomites.

đŸȘš Geology of Tofana di Rozes

The enormous upper walls consist primarily of Principal Dolomite, known locally as Dolomia Principale.

These rocks formed during the Late Triassic, when the region lay beneath shallow tropical seas.

Carbonate sediment accumulated across vast tidal flats and marine platforms.

Over millions of years, the sediment hardened and was transformed into the thick layers of dolomite visible today.

The Ampezzo Dolomites preserve an exceptionally long geological record. UNESCO notes that the Northern Dolomites expose a rock sequence more than 3,000 meters thick spanning approximately 270 million years of Earth history.

🌊 A Mountain Born Beneath Ancient Seas

Long before the Alps existed, the future Tofane were part of an evolving tropical marine environment.

Shallow seas alternated with lagoons, tidal flats, reefs, and deeper basins.

Sediment accumulated layer upon layer.

Some of those layers later became the hard carbonate rock forming the great walls.

Others became softer marl and clay formations.

The contrast between resistant and weak rock remains clearly visible today.

Around Tofana di Rozes, enormous Principal Dolomite walls stand above softer reddish and gray strata belonging to the Travenanzes Formation.

đŸŸ„ The Red Rocks Beneath the Wall

One of the most visually striking geological features around Rozes occurs near the base of the south face.

The enormous pale Dolomite wall rises above softer reddish and gray clays.

These belong mainly to the Travenanzes Formation.

Because these rocks erode more quickly than the overlying Principal Dolomite, the harder wall can become undercut.

Eventually large blocks may collapse, feeding the enormous scree fields beneath the mountain.

The contrast also creates the distinctive horizontal bands known locally as the CĂČrdes, particularly visible above the SotecĂłrdes landscape.

🟠 Triassic Amber

The Tofane preserve another remarkable geological treasure.

Triassic amber has been discovered within the clay-rich formations near Rifugio Dibona.

Some of this amber is among the oldest known anywhere in the world.

Researchers have found pollen and tiny arthropods preserved within individual amber droplets.

The material records forest ecosystems that existed on low islands and coastal environments during the Triassic.

It creates an extraordinary contrast with the modern mountain: insects once trapped in resin near sea level are now preserved beneath cliffs rising more than three kilometers into the sky.

🌎 Raising the Tofane

The sedimentary rocks remained buried for millions of years.

Later, tectonic collision associated with formation of the Alps compressed and uplifted the region.

Ancient seabed deposits rose thousands of meters above sea level.

Faulting fractured the rock into large blocks.

Erosion then began shaping the uplifted landscape.

Rivers cut valleys.

Rainwater exploited cracks.

Freezing water widened fractures.

Gravity removed unstable rock.

Glaciers later deepened valleys and carved mountain basins.

The enormous modern Tofane are the surviving remnants of this long geological transformation.

đŸ§± Why the Walls Form Giant Steps

Tofana di Rozes is famous for its almost architectural shape.

Large horizontal ledges interrupt otherwise vertical cliffs.

These ledges develop where softer rock bands erode more rapidly than resistant Dolomite.

The harder beds remain as walls.

The softer layers retreat into terraces.

Vertical fractures divide those horizontal layers into pillars and buttresses.

The result looks almost engineered: enormous walls stacked above one another like the levels of a gigantic fortress.

This structural geometry is one of the defining characteristics of the Ampezzo Dolomites.

🧊 Ice Age Glaciation

During the Pleistocene, glaciers filled the valleys surrounding the Tofane.

Ice occupied Val Travenanzes, the Ampezzo basin, and numerous high cirques.

Moving glaciers deepened valleys and steepened mountain walls.

They also transported vast quantities of broken rock.

As the glaciers retreated, they left moraines, cirques, boulder fields, and hanging valleys.

Today only snowfields and small patches of persistent ice remain in much of the Tofane.

The huge scree slopes beneath Rozes continue evolving through frost weathering and rockfall.

📜 First Recorded Ascent

The first recorded ascent of Tofana di Rozes took place on August 29, 1864.

Austrian mountaineer Paul Grohmann climbed with three Ampezzo companions:

  • Francesco Lacedelli
  • Angelo Dimai
  • Santo Siorpaes

Grohmann had already climbed Tofana di Mezzo with Lacedelli exactly one year earlier.

The Rozes ascent added another major summit to Grohmann’s remarkable exploration of the Dolomites.

🧗 The Golden Age of Dolomite Climbing

The 1860s were a turning point for the Dolomites.

Climbers were beginning to treat these limestone mountains as objectives in their own right rather than obstacles or scenery.

Grohmann played a central role.

Within a remarkably short period, he participated in first ascents of Tofana di Mezzo, Antelao, Tofana di Rozes, Sorapiss, Marmolada, Cristallo, and numerous other major peaks.

The Ampezzo guides who climbed with him—particularly the Lacedelli, Dimai, and Siorpaes families—helped establish Cortina as one of the historic centers of Alpine guiding.

Despite the mountain’s intimidating appearance from the south, its normal route is comparatively moderate.

The standard ascent begins from Rifugio Dibona, at approximately 2,080 meters.

Trail 403 climbs toward Rifugio Giussani, at 2,580 meters.

From Giussani, the summit route follows marked traces and broken rock toward the northwest ridge.

The ascent from Rifugio Dibona involves roughly 1,140 meters of elevation gain and can take about 2œ–3 hours for a strong, experienced party, although conditions and pace vary.

🏠 Rifugio Dibona

Rifugio Dibona is the principal starting point for many routes on Tofana di Rozes.

The refuge stands at approximately 2,080 meters beneath the south side of the massif.

A road provides relatively convenient access from the Cortina–Passo Falzarego corridor.

From the hut, hikers can:

  • Climb toward Rifugio Giussani
  • Traverse beneath the south face
  • Reach the Castelletto
  • Begin approaches to the Lipella ferrata
  • Access major rock-climbing routes
  • Explore the Astaldi trail and SotecĂłrdes

Its location makes Rifugio Dibona one of the great mountain bases in the Cortina region.

🏠 Rifugio Giussani

Rifugio Camillo Giussani stands at 2,580 meters in Forcella Fontananegra between Tofana di Rozes and the central Tofane.

The first hut in the area opened in 1886 as Rifugio Tofana.

It was destroyed during World War I and later rebuilt as Rifugio Cantore.

In 1972, a new refuge was constructed in its present position and named for mountaineer Camillo Giussani.

From Rifugio Dibona, the hut can be reached by Trail 403 with approximately 567 meters of elevation gain.

It is the logical high base for the Rozes normal route.

From Giussani, the route becomes substantially rougher.

Paint marks and cairns lead across scree and boulders.

The trail climbs through gullies and terraces toward the northwest ridge.

Short rocky sections reach approximately Grade I.

One inclined slab includes metal aids.

Beyond this terrain, switchbacks climb the broad upper western slope.

The final summit area is comparatively open and carries a large summit cross.

In dry summer conditions, the normal route is within the ability of strong experienced mountain hikers comfortable with easy scrambling.

Snow, ice, fog, or fresh rockfall can change that assessment quickly.

🌄 Summit Views

The summit provides an extraordinary panorama across the Ampezzo Dolomites.

Tofana di Mezzo and Tofana di Dentro rise immediately nearby.

To the east are Cristallo and Sorapiss.

Antelao dominates part of the southeastern skyline.

Farther south and west, the view extends toward Marmolada, the Sella group, and numerous other Dolomite massifs.

Far below lies the entire Cortina basin.

🧗 Via Ferrata Giovanni Lipella

The Via Ferrata Giovanni Lipella is one of the great high-altitude via ferratas of the Dolomites.

It provides a much more challenging way to climb Tofana di Rozes.

đŸ•łïž The Castelletto Tunnel

The Lipella route begins with one of the most extraordinary via ferrata approaches in the Dolomites.

Climbers enter the Castelletto mine tunnel, an underground military passage dating from World War I.

The tunnel is more than 500 meters long and gains approximately 120 vertical meters through the mountain.

A headlamp or flashlight is essential.

Steel stairs lead upward through the darkness before eventually emerging high on the Castelletto.

This is not merely a recreational tunnel—it formed part of one of the most famous military operations of the Dolomite front.

⚔ World War I on Tofana di Rozes

When Italy entered World War I in 1915, the Tofane became part of the front between Italian and Austro-Hungarian forces.

The mountains were quickly transformed into a high-altitude military landscape.

Troops constructed:

  • Barracks
  • Gun positions
  • Trenches
  • Observation posts
  • Supply routes
  • Defensive shelters

Val Travenanzes was strategically important, and the Tofane formed a major natural barrier overlooking the valley.

đŸȘ– The Castelletto

The Castelletto is a large rock outcrop immediately west of Tofana di Rozes.

Its position allowed Austro-Hungarian troops to dominate important approaches and observe Italian positions.

Both armies excavated tunnels into the mountain.

The extraordinary result has been described as a kind of wartime condominium: Austrian tunnels occupied upper portions while Italian galleries penetrated the lower mountain.

The struggle for this relatively small rock feature became one of the defining episodes of the fighting around Cortina.

đŸ’„ The Mine of July 11, 1916

Italian forces eventually attempted to destroy the Austrian position from underground.

Miners excavated a long gallery beneath the Castelletto and packed the end with explosives.

On July 11, 1916, the mine detonated.

The blast destroyed part of the Austrian defensive position and allowed Italian troops to occupy the Castelletto.

The present Lipella approach passes directly through portions of this historic mine system.

Visitors are therefore moving not just through a mountain but through a surviving battlefield.

🧗 Climbing Above the Tunnel

After emerging from the Castelletto gallery, ferrata climbers traverse around the western side of Tofana di Rozes.

The route follows a remarkable system of ledges.

Some passages cross steep rock with considerable exposure.

Higher up, another section of cables climbs toward a 3,027-meter pre-summit.

This portion includes vertical terrain and requires significant strength and endurance.

From the end of the equipped section, climbers join the normal route and reach the main summit in about 30 minutes.

❄ Snow and Ice on Lipella

The route’s altitude is important.

Cortina’s official guidance specifically warns that snow and ice may remain even during summer.

Snowfields can obstruct ledges.

Water can freeze inside shaded passages.

Hard snow on the upper route can require equipment beyond a normal via ferrata kit.

Because the route is long, conditions encountered early in the morning may also differ substantially from those found during the afternoon descent.

🧗 The Great South Face

The south face of Tofana di Rozes is one of the major rock walls of the Dolomites.

Its vertical scale is enormous.

From below, the wall appears as a giant tiered amphitheater divided by buttresses and ledges.

Early mountaineers had reached the summit from easier terrain, but the direct southern cliffs remained a much more formidable challenge.

By the beginning of the twentieth century, climbers increasingly wanted to ascend mountains not merely by the easiest route but by their greatest walls.

Rozes became an important arena for this new style.

đŸ‘©â€đŸŠ° The Eötvös Sisters

On August 8, 1901, the previously unclimbed south face was ascended by an extraordinary team:

  • Ilona von Eötvös
  • Rolanda von Eötvös
  • Antonio Dimai
  • Agostino Verzi
  • Giovanni Siorpaes

The two Hungarian baronesses were among the most accomplished female mountaineers of their era.

Their climb was not an easier variation selected for clients.

It was the first ascent of the entire south face.

The achievement deserves a central place in both Dolomite climbing history and the history of women in mountaineering.

🧗 The Eötvös–Dimai Route

The line established in 1901 is now generally called the Eötvös–Dimai Route.

PlanetMountain describes it as approximately:

  • 850 meters long
  • Grade III–IV+, with harder individual passages depending on the grading system
  • A major classical Alpine route requiring stamina and route-finding ability

The line climbs into the great central amphitheater before traversing across highly exposed terrain toward the southwest edge.

Despite its moderate technical grade by modern standards, the route’s enormous scale makes it a serious undertaking.

🧗 A Wall That Changed Climbing

For fifteen years after the 1901 ascent, the Eötvös–Dimai remained the only route through the immense south face.

Later generations began finding increasingly difficult lines through the wall’s giant buttresses.

Routes opened on the major edges and pillars.

Technical standards rose.

By the middle of the twentieth century, Rozes had become one of the major testing grounds of Dolomite rock climbing.

The south face now contains an extraordinary mixture of historical and modern routes, ranging from long classical climbs to extremely difficult contemporary lines.

🧗 Pilastro di Rozes

One of the great structural features of the south face is the Pilastro di Rozes, an enormous rock pillar projecting from the mountain.

Its walls contain numerous important climbing routes.

The pillar gives the south face additional depth: it is not simply one flat wall but a three-dimensional collection of buttresses, amphitheaters, corners, and ridges.

From below, the architecture can make route lines difficult to understand.

That complexity is one reason historical Dolomite climbing placed such a high value on route-finding skill.

đŸžïž Parco Naturale delle Dolomiti d’Ampezzo

Much of the Tofane landscape lies within the Parco Naturale delle Dolomiti d’Ampezzo.

The protected area surrounds the northern and western portions of the Cortina basin and preserves approximately 11,000 hectares of mountain terrain.

The Tofane are among the park’s most important massifs.

Their habitats range from forests and alpine meadows to cliffs exceeding 3,200 meters.

That enormous vertical range produces surprisingly diverse plant and animal communities despite the seemingly barren appearance of the upper mountain.

🌍 UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Tofane belong to the Northern Dolomites component of The Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This is the largest of the nine UNESCO Dolomite systems, covering more than 53,000 hectares.

It includes the Tofane, Cristallo, Fanes–Senes–Braies, Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the Sesto Dolomites, Cadini di Misurina, and other major groups.

The region contains one of the most complete and varied geological sequences found anywhere in the Dolomites.

🌿 Flora and Fauna

The summit itself is largely barren rock and scree.

Lower down, however, the Tofane contain unusual plant communities.

The natural park records the endemic Saxifraga facchinii along the highest ridges.

The rock shelters around Rozes and SotecĂłrdes contain specialized plants including the endemic Moehringia glaucovirens.

The warm protected terraces beneath the south face provide valuable habitat during winter.

The area supports substantial numbers of chamois, while other wildlife includes rock partridge, golden eagles, mountain hares, ptarmigan, and numerous smaller Alpine species.

🐐 Chamois

The Ampezzo Dolomites contain some of the highest concentrations of chamois in the Dolomites.

Hundreds can use the broader Tofana landscape.

The warmer south-facing slopes around SotecĂłrdes are particularly important during winter.

Chamois move between rocky cliffs, grasslands, and forest edges according to weather and food availability.

Their ability to travel across steep terrain is extraordinary.

Visitors should allow animals plenty of space, especially during winter when unnecessary movement costs valuable energy.

🩅 Golden Eagles

Golden eagles use the cliffs of the Tofane for nesting and hunting.

The Ampezzo natural park identifies nesting sites on Tofana and neighboring Cristallo.

Large cliffs provide secure sites, while open grasslands and rocky slopes offer hunting habitat.

Thermal currents rising along sunlit walls allow the birds to soar efficiently.

Spotting an eagle above Rozes provides a reminder that these famous climbing cliffs are also functioning wildlife habitat.

🌄 Enrosadira

Like other great Dolomite mountains, Tofana di Rozes can display spectacular enrosadira.

Low-angle sunlight at sunrise and sunset transforms the pale carbonate rock through shades of yellow, orange, rose, and red.

The south and southwest walls are particularly well positioned for dramatic evening light.

The mountain’s layered structure intensifies the effect.

Some terraces remain in shadow while enormous upper cliffs glow.

From Passo Falzarego and the surrounding high meadows, Rozes at sunset can become one of the most striking sights in the entire Cortina region.

Rozes should be treated as a serious 3,200-meter Alpine mountain.

Summer thunderstorms can develop quickly.

Lightning creates extreme danger on summit ridges and steel via ferrata cables.

Rain can make smooth Dolomite ledges slippery.

Fog can obscure cairns and route markings on the normal route.

Snow may linger through summer in shaded areas, while fresh snow can arrive surprisingly early in autumn.

Long routes such as Lipella require an especially stable forecast because retreat can become complicated once a party has progressed far around the mountain.

Tofana di Mezzo reaches approximately 3,244 meters, making it the highest summit of the Tofane.

It is also the parent and Nearest Higher Neighbor of Rozes.

Despite the small 19-meter difference in elevation, their landscapes are quite different.

Mezzo is now accessible close to its summit by cable car.

Rozes has no summit lift and retains a much stronger mountaineering character.
